Should I send follow-up emails a month after sending an application?

I've done this with a few places I've applied to and haven't heard back. Is it any use doing this? Is it seen as obnoxious? I'll get excited applying to a good company with a position that fits and just want to check on the status of the application/let them know of my deep interest in working there.
