Received a bad reference, now being asked what I would have done differently...

As the title states, I received a bad reference. This is genuinely a surprise for me as she has left me good references in the past. We recently had a personal falling out - but I did not assume that she would give me a bad reference due to personal reasons (our professional relationship was great).

Now via email, the recruiter is asking me what I would have done differently? why did I ask this person to be my reference? Did we have troubles communicating and cooperating?

Of course, I called the person that gave me the reference and asked and she said she talked about how she was a bad culture fit and we had troubles because of her being "bad." I am not convinced by this...

What do I tell the recruiter? I would like to hear what the recruiter is referring to first and what this girl said about me?

Of course there are things I wish I did differently - it has been a couple years and I have grown a lot... but without knowing exactly what she is referring to, I am lost.

Can I tell the recruiter I contacted the reference? Can I ask the recruiter to be more specific.

I will, of course, apologize to the recruited for giving a bad reference... but I really wanted this job.
