Pausing applying for a bit - wwyd in my situation?

I graduated back in May, BA in Biology, during which I had an internship and completed a senior independent study. I had been looking for a job, and managed to earn my spot in some interviews for some actually really good positions (Research Assistant at a very good school and at a major research hospital), but unfortunately did not get those positions. I've been working in a restaurant to pay the bills.

Issue: last week, I found out that I needed to have two major foot surgeries this year, lest I be at risk of even more major surgeries that may not even work. Each has about a 2 month recovery time. As such, I decided that I would cease applying for jobs until both surgeries are complete and I'm healing from the second one, in about a year's time. I shared this decision with a few people who immediately criticized me and told me that I should pretend that I don't know I'm getting surgery until after being hired. While this sounds wrong, I'm still kind of second guessing myself.

Given the situation, do you think that I'm making the best choice, or should I continue to apply? TIA
