I graduate next May and have a very unusual story/background (not conventional student graduating). I don't know what to do other than teaching. HELP!
I graduate from university in May and I was planning on going into teaching, however, my recent experience in a school environment has put me off of education and has clarified that I am not that great with children and not a fan of public speaking.
My background is a little strange. In 2014, I started uni at a top 20 one here in the UK. I studied there for 2 years and was supposed to go on my year abroad starting the summer of 2016. Due to some personal issues I didn’t go through with my year abroad and “took the year out”. I was due to start final year at uni in 2017-18, however, that year off really opened my eyes and made me realise I wasn’t happy at uni and sick of the classic UK student lifestyle. I decided to drop out and get some life experience.
I worked in a shitty retail/sales job at an electronic company from November 2017 to June 2018 before my volunteering for a local political party paid off and they created a part-time position just for me which is essentially running their constituency office and managing their election campaigns. I will be in this job until the local elections in May are over and then I will be unemployed.
Whilst working this job I am finishing my degree with Open University (studying 2 modules at once to make it a year rather than 2). I have gotten Firsts in all my essays so far.
My original intention was to go into teaching, however, as I have said above, I’m not enjoying my experience at the moment. The school is lovely but I really don’t identify which the profession and the other teachers. I’m quite uptight which isn’t a great trait when trying to teach 30+ 5-12 year olds.
Therefore, when I graduate in May I will have the following post-18 year old C.V. (TL;DR version obviously):
-
2014-16 - Top 20 UK University, Diploma of Higher Education in American History
-
November 2017-June 2018 - Retail/Sales Job at Electronic Company
-
June 2018-May 2019 - Campaigns Manager for a national political party’s local branch
-
Oct 2018-May 19 - Open University, History
The gaps in my employment history are all filled in with volunteering at schools, for the political party I am now employed by and some gaps of “unemployment”.
My current job involves a wide range of areas:
-
I design leaflets and social media posts
-
I contact members and recruit new ones
-
I work with candidates and politicians to work out strategy to win more votes and seats
-
I increase social media engagement and run paid ads
-
I ensure delivery of all literature in a timely fashion
I have been looking into jobs in communications and administration at universities because I do miss the artsy, collegiate vibe of campus, however, teaching was always my “back-up” plan. I am worried that I will apply for these sorts of jobs and not get anywhere.
I am not asking for much in life. Most of my peers have gone to London to chase six figure salaries. I just want a job for life that pays £20-30k and that I enjoy.
-
What advice would you give to me?
-
Would my experience make me an attractive candidate for administrative/press/communications jobs at universities and/or businesses?
Thank you. I just feel really down atm
