Hi!
So, my father in law invited me to be part of a company we´re creating. We´re going to sell some digital solutions to other companies.
Without going into much detail, in this first stage of our company, my task is to create the "skeleton" of our application and when we get past this stage, my main task will be to implement some data and machine learning procedures to our services.
I´ve been very straight forward in order for the other partners to manage expectations. I´ve made very clear that I´m no programmer (currently I´m working as an actuarial intern for a firm, my background is precisely math and act. sci.) but they came to me because my girlfriend talked to her dad about my constant "development" of tools that automatize my job and my self-teaching schedule for machine learning and quant finance.
I know basic Java, but that is not the language I´m gonna use for these tasks. I´ve prepared my material for this stage (and of course, the future stages will be developed in the same one) in Python. What I´ve done is actually basic stuff, since it is mainly going to be used to get another partner on board with our idea (think about pitching the business to him) and to register the product (since my country´s regulation allows you to register with a pre-product).
Tomorrow morning we´re having our second meeting and my in law asked me to come up with a price for my services. It is still unclear to me if I´m going to be a partner or if I´m just going to collaborate with them (since I´ve also been asked to come up with names for the company).
Maybe another important detail is that apparently my father in law didn´t expect to pay me at all. But my mother in law actually talked him into the idea and now it is on the table.
So, as you can see, I´m not very clear on what my specific role will be within the company, but still got asked to come up with a price. Needless to say, I´ve no idea of how much does professional developers charge (and I´m aware I´m not one of them). Also, I do need the money and would appreciate to get payed, but most important for me is that this "co-working" process is good for my relationship with my father in law (we haven´t had any problems or anything, but this is one of the things that you don´t want to screw up).
So, please help me Reddit, you´re my only hope.
