Healthcare Industry-Clinical Instructors giving lukewarm responses

Hello all,

I'm in the healthcare field and I am most passionate about a specialty area. This specialty area does accept new graduates, which I am, but does check references from your past two internships. Despite my best efforts, positive feedback from patients in my care, and good response from co-workers, my direct supervisors and I never fully gelled. They have a reputation for being harsh and cold and I did not know how to navigate this. I was fairly meek and am still learning to project confidence to avoid being placed in this position again.

I am required to submit references from supervisors from these two internships or other work experience. I was brainstorming possible solutions to my dilemma:

1.) Wait 1-2 years to apply to this dream specialty area. After this work experience, perform well, and have better references

2.) Apply anyways with my current clinical instructors as references and hope for the best. Contact references and explain how important this area of practice is to you, emphasize your patient care skills, things you did well, etc.
