Hi guys, I’m a 4th year undergrad at UC Berkeley graduating in CS and Econ and considering my first job. I want to do finance but all my internship experiences so far have been in tech. I have two offers on the table, one in SF and one in NY, and any advice would really be appreciated on what I should do:
- I interned for two years as a technology analyst at BoFA (in New York City) and got the return offer, but I’m really feeling it’s not the right place for me (the work isn’t interesting, it’s really boring, it has nothing to do with finance which I’m really interested in, but at the same time it has great work life balance (9:30 to 6, but probably only about 4 hours of actual work each day). I also like New York and I’ll put up with the bad weather if it means great city life and easy access to things. The pay is 92k base in NYC.
- I have an offer to work at a no-name public finance firm in San Francisco, near Embarcadero Station. It’ll give me the foundation that I didn’t learn in school, but it’s in SF vs NY, which means not as many opportunities to break out somewhere else and not much life outside of work (correct me if I’m wrong). There’s no branding with this company, but it is an ibanking firm, and the point of working with them is to help me find someplace better in the future (long term at this firm might be an option, but I don’t know yet because I haven’t started). The pay is 75k base in SF.
I could also keep recruiting, but as I painfully know, it’s late in the recruiting phase now. (by the way my dream company was Bloomberg, because I wanted fintech but they never got back to me).
Redditors, I need your help and your wisdom that comes with experience. What should I do?
