Job offer retracted day before I was due to start

This is going to be quite a long one. TLDR down below.

I've been in my current place of work for almost 5 years now. It was only supposed to be a temporary job. The atmosphere in the office is toxic and the place is unrecognisable from when I began due to the amount of people coming and going. We're working with a skeleton staff now.

This is mainly due to the owners. Its a family run business, husband was the director before he got into trouble with the tax man, his daughter now runs the company and his wife is the head of HR.

They're rarely in the office and when they are it's usually because someone is in trouble. The Wife has a reputation for making people leave her office in tears. They take it very personally when people put their notice in.

I've actually had several roles in there but I was given my most recent role because they were short staffed in that department. I was the best fit since I was already trained up in the systems they use but I wasn't really given a choice since there were redudancies. I was told the department I was working in was top heavy and then offered the new role. In my opinion it was take it or leave.

I immediately began job searching after that and applied for a staff position at the police. Being a police officer is an idea I have thought about for a while but never really did anything about it. I decided to go for a civilian role in the police and possibly apply to become an officer if I liked it. The application was more like an essay and I sent it off in March.

I didn't hear anything until June when I was invited to an interview. It went well and I was passed to vetting for background checks before they could offer me the job. I passed the vetting checks as well and in July I was offered the job. There was intensive training involved which meant I had to be available for 2 weeks. They only conducted these training sessions once a month.

My current work has a 4 week notice period which I made them aware of but I was offered a start date in July. I told them this didn't accommodate my notice period and they offered me the next intake in August.

This is where it gets tricky. I had already booked and paid for holidays, one in August and one in September. Both the intake days for the training fell on the days I would be abroad. I let them know and they reassured me this was fine and I would be pushed forward to the next available intake.

Between September and November I heard nothing. A few emails back and forth but they kept saying they didn't have the numbers for another training session and would let me know as soon as it becomes available to accommodate my notice period.

I then got a phone call out off the blue asking me to start in December. It meant I had to put my notice in the next day in order to meet my 4 weeks notice but it was just in time. I put my notice in on good faith since I had received a verbal offer. My contract was sent to me the following week. It was conditional on receipt of acceptable references.

In my current department there is only a handful of us and only 2 of us are full time and the rest work part time. Putting in my notice put them in a bit of bother and has meant they've had to reschedule working days for some people to make sure there's enough staff every day.

I felt bad but at the same time it was not my problem to worry about.

Last night I received a letter from the police telling me the offer has been retracted due to an unacceptable reference. Today is my last day. I was due to start on Monday. I sent them an email straight away asking for clarification. I won't hear until later today I suppose.

The Wife has been known to give bad references to people out of spite for leaving their company. I don't know for sure it was her but I don't know who else it could be. I've always been a good employee, no disciplinaries, never been in trouble. I've always accommodated them by taking on work when we've been short staffed.

I thought about calling in sick today but who is going to believe that on my last day? If I don't go in and finish working my notice it could work against me. Now I have to pretend everything is fine while everyone congratulates me on my 'new job'.

I'll be unemployed at the end of the day, 3 weeks before Christmas. I've no idea what to do I just feel so helpless.

Not sure why I posted this. Just wanted to vent I suppose and see if people have ever been in a similar situation and if they had it resolved. I just need to find out what was said and appeal it if I can. There's nothing they could possibly say about me that would cause me to lose the job.

Tl:dr New job offer retracted days before I was due to start due to spiteful HR giving a bad reference.

Now unemployed 3 weeks before Christmas.
