Even if you think you suck at your job or your industry sucks and can't find anything better, you really need to get your resume out there just in case.

My current job isn't a great fit for me. Its my first job in this field and I assumed that all companies in the industry were pretty similar. That the problems I have encountered were universal. After all i've been here for more than 2 years, and talking to other people in the same industry I heard a lot of the same complaints.

I got fed up a few weeks ago and said "FUCK IT" updated my resume and got it out there. Learned three things real quick.

  1. No matter what you do there IS a company doing it really well. Even if its a notoriously messed up industry. Making all the right choices. Using the best resources money can buy.

  2. If you, like me have been doing your job for more than a few months, there is a much larger demand for your skills than you'd think. After all you now have experience and skills, when you were looking for the job you were joe schmoe.

  3. Recruiters are a pain in the butt. Only deal with them if they are offering a job you WANT. Companies who need your skills will find you if you give them time.

I was shocked. The company I've been working for is regarded as one of the big players in the industry. I assumed that we had our act together. NOPE. We are chimps with rocks smashing open nuts and some of the smaller companies in the industry are doing quantum physics. The salaries that I heard about other people in the industry getting (think 50+% more) are out there and attainable.

I always thought the old adage of going on an interview every month even if you're happy was overly optimistic. Naw, from here on out I'm putting myself out there every 6 months no matter what.

Also I learned that the workload at my current job is (as I often suspected) the absolute maximum a person can handle without making catastrophic mistakes. And that there are lots of other companies focusing on quality over quantity.

In about 2 months i'll start a job getting paid way more, working way less, with better benefits and working with people who are far more passionate about their work. I can't believe that a few weeks ago I thought I was stuck in a dead end job in a messed up industry.

TL:DR- Putting your resume out there will do no harm.
