Throwaway account for obvious reasons. I recently got a new job (5 months) however it just hasn't turned out the way I expected.
This is a relatively high pay job and I wanted to say that I'm very greatful to have a job that is significantly above the national average where I live.
This was advertised as a technical role (IT) with the appropriate selection criteria. I fully expected to utilise my skills and even stretch them. However, this is not the case.
There was even one or two selection criteria that isn't even applicable to the job. There is a culture of only getting to the end result and skipped the building blocks to develop high quality and maintainable applications. So basically minimal to analysis, documentation or testing. Also anyone can make any changes and well with no real testing/approval or any processes...(it is not enforced) just hope for the best. If the person who made the changes have left then good luck as everything is in their head.
I tried to show people the benefits of following their own policy which I was able to demonstrate better customer satisfaction and lower resourcing costs and deliver a part of the product ahead of the usual time. However, noone seems interested in what I have to say even when presented very politely. The less work the better seems to be the motto.
Am I in the wrong? Is it rude for me to suggest things since I'm the new person? I've talked to friends and some of them say their place their rules (or lack of), many say they pay you so much, wouldn't you be happier to do less anyway? (It's not really less when you're constantly chasing your tail) Why would you bother to change anything if they're paying you well?
I feel so bored and demotivated as I can't utilise my skills at all, it feels like I have gone back 30 years in time with the way they do things. In fact I don't know why I am a bit desperate for a new job after less than 6 months, and I'm 100% sure I will be worked harder for the same or less pay. My relatives think I'm stupid and blame it on my lack of ability to adapt to a new workplace culture.
What should I do? Is all this my failure to adapt to a new workplace? If I don't do a year I'll probably be overlooked due to the "why are you planning to leave so soon?" question. "New challenges" isn't an acceptable answer considering the timeframe.
Sorry a bit light on details and using a throwaway for obvious reasons.
