What are some good places to volunteer at to gain experiences and references for future jobs?

All of my former references disappeared as in I can’t contact them through phone/email or they no longer work there. I currently have one that said I can always put her down as a reference. I’m trying to build up my resume, but I’m not sure where to volunteer at. I’m currently volunteering for the woman that said I can use her as a reference. I also volunteered 3 years at a reading program, but the program manager turns out to be a massive jerk when I told him I couldn’t volunteer this time. Obviously, I won’t be using him a reference and I’m not planning to return after what he said to me.

Anyway, I’m thinking I could volunteering at the library or something? What are some other places I could volunteer at?
