Warehouse Job is more work for physically fit men, easier for obese and (to an extent) females at same pay.

So I took a low pay (less than $15/hr fast food entry level) warehouse job in between software gigs and the holidays. It’s at a temp agency at a distribution center for a large retailer.

The temp agency Staffing is about 60% female- of which 75% are obese. For the men about half are obese.

That presents a problem because the retailer really wants (and needs) fit people for certain strenuous and fast operations like order picking and loading/unloading at the shipping docks.

As one of the fit makes I’m nearly always selected for order picking or shipping. Females are never assigned to shipping areas, and obese fellow employees are rarely assigned to order picking

In order fulfillment the orders arrive via conveyor belt to stations where items are scanned at pack, so it is far less strenuous than shipping and order picking.

My compliant is that everyone is paid the same even though some are only assigned the easier posts. In job summary, all employees are supposed to work in all areas of the warehouse. But this not the practice.

The worse is that we are judged in quota by our primary role which is order fulfillment. But when we are temporarily assigned to order picking or shipping, our fulfillment quota drops because of the time away on temp assignments.

The staffing Agency have absolutely no understanding of metrics, let alone analytics. They simply look at the number of fulfillment’s divided by the number of shift hours.

So not only are you working harder than some of your contemporaries, but they actually have better performance quotas for doing less.

I find it hard to believe that no one has challenged this stupid, insane methodology beforehand.
