Required to give a months notice?

Hello!

I am interested in leaving my job and work in an industry with notoriously high turnover. My boss, however, had us all sign contracts that stipulate that we must give a months notice before quitting. I am interviewing for a new position that would require me to leave sooner.

I live in DC and am fairly certain that my employer cannot legally require me to give a months notice, but am not really sure. I think my contract may void out my ability to leave when I would need to - anyone have any insight?
