To quickly sum up the details, I’m currently employed at a hospital in NJ as a Nutrition Assistant (my BS degree is in Nutrition) and have been actively seeking for positions in the natural food industry while I was in my last year of college, even before landing my current job (that I can’t stand working at). I live at home with my parents right now in NJ, but I’m more than willing to move out to California as many food brands based in the state that I am interested in working for have missions that align with my own. On top of that, I’ve also traveled to California many times and absolutely love the culture and the abundance of things that the state offers, so moving there with a job lined up that I am actually passionate about would work out wonderfully and bring out the best in me.
I have applied to numerous jobs in CA, only to receive e-mails a few weeks later notifying me that the opening is now closed. I am having lots of trouble getting noticed by anyone and I 100% believe it is because my resume and LinkedIn profile state where I currently live. I have family out in the Bay Area that I could stay with for a little bit (although, I really don’t want to because it isn’t a very healthy or safe environment but I suppose I would do what I need to do temporarily to get to where I need to be) while I look for work and get settled, but I obviously cannot and will not use my family’s mailing address on my resume as I do not want to lie and risk losing any opportunities. I’m not sure how to approach this situation because I know many companies are unwilling to relocate people because it doesn’t make sense logistically and financially, when they can find a qualified candidate within the vicinity of the workplace. I understand this completely and am absolutely OK with paying for my relocation expenses solely out of my own pocket. I even have resources (my family members) to help me with my move and the transition.
How can I make this known to companies without sounding desperate to make the move? How do I have them give my application a chance without tossing it aside just because it says I live all the way across the country on the opposite coast?
