Need help with a follow up email

Need some advice on how to approach writing a follow up email. I have a mobile number for the hiring manager, but wouldn't dare contact him directly with it. I do have the email address for the in house recruiter. The interview was Tuesday, they are going to make a decision tomorrow and announce next week.

Should I bother with a follow up email at all? If so should I just email the in house recruiter and ask to forward to the hiring manager? Any thoughts on this? I usually don't like follow up emails, in fact I've only done it 4/5 times and they've never worked. But my friends think I should on this occasion - just don't know how to.
