My boss treated me like his waitress in front of all my coworkers and right after gave me power over others... what's up with this dude? How would you have reacted?
It was a very subtle power move. He organized a meeting to vent and reprimand a few of my coworkers who are bad at their job.
We had all got into the meeting room when I realized I forgot my phone outside, so I stood up and headed towards the door. We were 11 total and there was just two bottles of water on the table, so my boss sees me standing up and says "hey Pete, would you bring in some more water please?".
That's all he said. I understood he meant "for the group", but it still bothered me because a) nobody had touched those two bottles, b) nobody ever drinks on those meetings except for him, and c) I'm his damn waitress... I pretended it didn't bother me, replied "yeah, sure" on my way out, went out, grab my phone, two more bottles and got back in.
When I put them on the table I joked "this is all we have, so ration them!". At that point, one of my female coworker (the one my boss tried to have an affair with and who's essentially the "queen of the office") says "hey Pete, what about some sandwiches, would you bring some in please?"
She said it clearly joking, so I looked at her with smile, winked at her and sat back down without saying a word.
The meeting went on as expected: the 4 coworkers were reprimanded in front of everyone and were told to "get their shit together or get a new job".
However, after being treated like my boss' waitress, I got the golden treatment during the meeting: I was told in front of everyone to "do whatever I wanted with my tasks and offload them onto others if necessary", that "I had the power to pick and choose which tasks I wanted to do", and that "shitty employee A, B and C are at your disposal". He didn't say "shitty", but pointed at them. Total freedom.
Humiliated one moment, "rock-star employee" the next. Do you think he did it to show my coworkers who's the boss, or did it just rub me the wrong way?
EDIT: just a note, the same woman has been telling my boss in private to have a meeting like this to set all employees straight. She repeatedly told him which employees are good (herself and couple of others, both absent from this meeting) while everyone else needed to "have the talk".
And my boss did it...
