Hi all, I'm on here because I've been stuck in a career rut for the last two years and I'm unsure of what to do. I graduated three years ago from college with a political science degree and then moved to DC. I loved my first job at an international development NGO, but it was a temp job and paid a very low salary so I then moved on to work at a charter school. Although the school had great benefits and I never had to work over 40 hours/week, I hated the job. I then went back to another NGO but wasn't allowed to do any of the interesting work because I didn't have a master's degree so I was stuck being a glorified secretary (making copies, scheduling meetings, booking travel, etc.)
I've been working as an analyst at a small consulting firm now and even though I enjoy the work more, I am working more hours than before due to unrealistic deadlines and the pay isn't all that great. The only job that I actually enjoyed was the first one, and the other three jobs have been pretty "meh" and I feel as if I'm counting down the days until my next job. I'm still hunting for the elusive job that I won't hate, pays a decent wage, and has decent work-life balance. Maybe it's the area I'm in, as DC is hyper-competitive and workaholic and master's degrees are entry-level degrees here.
Perhaps I need a change of scenery. I've been a shell of my former self for the last two years and I've been pretty unhappy. I'm not depressed but I'm chronically unhappy and it's largely due to my employment issues. Basically, I was very happy and my life was on track when I worked at the first NGO but things have gone downhill since I left that job. Returning to that employer is not an option, as I would be making a lot less than I'm making now. I'm open to any advice.
