I signed a 1-year commitment for job. Can I quit half way?

Hello. I volunteered at a research lab during my undergraduate for about 8 months and my PI liked my work ethic and hired me. I have now worked for him fo about 1.5 months but now I want to quit because it is very boring for me. I was hired to do injections on lab animals but theres not much work now and I end up spending most of my time reading articles and not doing injections. I would like to get a job that is more relevant to my career path but I dont know if I can quit this job since I signed a 1-year commitment contract. Can I still quit or am I legally bound to work there for a year? Please let me know.
