I don't know how to handle the situation at work. My boss is disappointed and one of my peers displays antisocial behavior.
I'm in a technical leadership position and responsible for a team of about ten people. We are all professionals with an academic background. We are a middle-sized company and our director is a very demanding person. Our management is poorly organized. We are constantly failing to fulfill our contracts.
I didn't implement a reporting for a certain aspect of my responsibilities: Ensuring compliance with some legal requirements. My boss did never ask for reports. Therefore I didn't regularly check the compliance or implement anything (reporting, processes). I neglected this responsibility also because I have far to many tasks to do on a daily basis. My main role is very technical and consumes more time that I'm ever able to spend.
We had an infringement recently. Partially my fault on top of my negligence. There were no serious consequences. I cleaned the mess. I worked long hours and was terribly stressed.
A peer colleague of mine did the best to stress that I'm responsible for the mess. He made me look worse in front of our director. When I was already down and got a shit storm, he did the best to push it further. There was no need for that. I'm two years in the company, he for some months. I assume he wants to have a better standing with the boss than I have. He talked shit about me before. A colleague told me.
I had a good relationship with our director, despite his impulsive character and lack of empathy. He values my technical skills and likes the solutions I develop. He never trusts anyone's judgments. He does not cherish what I do for the company. His leadership style is very dominant. He has often unrealistic ideas how problems should be approached.
How can I approach my peer colleague who actively showed me in a bad light? How can I approach our director? I want to focus on my main role (technical) and don't want to be responsible for the whole topic. I hate it. Also I want to settle the situation as constructively as possible.
