I'm job hunting and I got asked for my employment history, and under each section, the company is asking whether they can contact this supervisor.
However, in the previous company, I didn't leave on good terms; long story short, I tried moving to a different team within the company because the team I was assigned to wasn't what I was expecting (it was a college grad program where you got placed a position), but when my supervisor found out, they became hostile and made my life at work hell.
I do, however, have an ex-coworker as a reference for that same company as one of my references. Will this company contact the supervisor, or will they contact the ex-coworker, or both? And what should I do in this situation?
EDIT: The "references" and "may we contact" are two separate pieces; in the references section, I have the co-worker in my previous company listed as a reference, but the "may we contact" is from the employment history, and there's a checkbox specifically asking if they can contact the "supervisor"
EDIT 2: This step is after all my interviews (including face-to-face interviews with everyone on the team)
EDIT 3: Follow-up: is it acceptable to put a professor as a reference? I've only been out of college for a year and a half.
