I have been applying for many jobs online and in person and have noticed an increasing number of the applications asking for your SSN right away. I am used to providing that info further into the hiring process, not immediately upfront. My worry is what if the person handling my application is an untrustworthy individual and does something with my personal information? I'm not sure what you could even do with someones SSN but growing up I always heard it was something you want to keep private.
Can anyone explain to me if its normal for jobs to ask for this right away and if my worries are rational? Thank you for any help.
The online applications require this and wont let you leave it blank
