Entry-level applications roadblock

I'm graduating from college in April 2019, and have been sending out a few applications for post-grad work (I know I probably won't get any responses until I'm applying for stuff closer to my grad date, but I figure it never hurts to toss out a few applications to get my feet wet). I'm using Indeed mostly, but a few other sites too, plus job fairs at school. I keep running into the infamous problem of every entry level job wanting years of experience. I have a job, but it's not relevant to my field of study. I don't have any relevant internship experience, but not for lack of trying. I spent all of 2017 trying to get an internship, but even the internships in my field expect 1-2 years of experience, and I couldn't get anybody to bite.

What I'm mainly worried about is that on indeed for example, after you upload your resume and cover letter, the application will ask something like "How many years of experience do you have with [thing]?" and I'm pretty sure all of my resumes are just going into the garbage because I'm answering honestly. Should I say that I have a year of experience with [thing] just to get the ATS to even scan my resume? Never mind getting some human eyeballs on it. My academic advisor and the career development office at my university say my resume is solid, I just don't have any experience to put on it.

tl;dr: Should/Can I tell indeed that I have a year of experience just to get the ATS to scan my resume?
