A colleague is out on workplace stress, the company doctor has diagnosed depression.

So a colleague, of the company 23 years, had been promised a payrise due to taking on extra responsibilities and covering a 2nd role in his current role.

He was also promised, and got a 'grade' change. In order to do this he went through various exercises including job description updates, touch time diaries etc. This grade change was approved and signed off, and made official in the HR system.

The grade change came and went but nothing on the pay front. I will say it was inly a verbal agreement, however his immediate manager doesn't deny this, instead claims HR have blocked it.

So fast forward a few months and no agreed payrise and also HR recinded the grade increase. All this while his area is extremely busy and as it happens a single point of failure I.E. he is the only guy and without him, the process comes to a halt - we cannot progress new products.

It really got to him. So he went to his own doctor who certified him in the basis of workplace stress. He initially was off 2 weeks but this has changed to infefinite. He is seeing a counsellor who also concurs that workplace stress in the root cause.

Last week, per company policy, he visited the company doctor, who diagnosed him with depression.

So after that longwinded explanation, my question is this: Is there a difference between stress and depression?

I am thinking depression absolves the company of any wrong doing.
