I began working at a hotel in December of 2011 at the Front Desk and gradually worked my way up to a management position, which I have been in for 2 years. I loved it then, and to this day I love it, but I can’t handle the 24/7/365 schedule anymore. Hotel management is always on call, and always expected to cover shifts when employees are sick or stop coming to work. At one point recently, I worked 19 days in a row but because I am a salaried position there was no overtime paid to me for the extra work. The stress has been terrible for my health, for my relationship, and for my overall well-being.
Recently, I decided to relocate to a larger city in my state to be with my boyfriend. Though hotel jobs are easy to come by and I have the experience, I thought I would try my hand at getting something with a more set schedule and better benefits. I was able to land a job for similar pay, m-f, 8-5, paid holidays, paid health insurance, and 2 weeks of vacation to start. Obviously I took the job offer and I start the new job on Monday the 12.
Here’s the issue: every October/November, our corporate office takes every General Manager on an all-expenses-paid cruise to the Bahamas with one guest. I am an Assistant General Manager so I do not get to go. I have around 85 hours of accrued vacation that I would like to have paid to me; however, my company does not pay out vacation if it isn’t taken and the employee must return to work for at least 8 hours after returning from PTO. I want to give my notice but because of the 10-day cruise I can not take vacation time. Is it completely unethical of me to wait until Friday the 9th to submit my notice and then tell my boss that I can only work a restricted weekends during my 2 week notice period so I can work at my new job m-f and take vacation time for the hours I am not working at the hotel? I think a restricted 2-week notice period is better than none at all, but I am obviously biased. I can’t think of any other way to get my earned and wanted vacation time but it turns my stomach to be dishonest about it.
Because I know someone will ask: if I tell my boss I am leaving and want to have my vacation paid to me, she will refuse. We are short-staffed enough that she will not fire me because she will want me to stay on as long as possible but she will not help me to have my vacation time paid to me, and because of the cruise I can’t just take a quick vacation to at least use some of my paid hours.
