Need help with an "out of a job" situation due to renovations

My wife works as a part time swim instructor/program director at the local pool. She works for the city and usually works about 12 hours a week. The pool had planned renovations from September to October so one session would be cancelled. They are now estimating the pool will be done in January, leaving my wife without a job until then. He boss advised that she apply for unemployment in the meantime, but I'm not sure that is right. Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this? While it's not a whole lot, she is missing out on lost wages, about $600 a month that we need. Any help is greatly appreciated!
