I’m posting on behalf of my husband because he doesn’t use Reddit.
His background is in graphic design and digital marketing. He has been with his current employer for almost 7 years, and is looking for a new job because he dislikes his current one and there is no opportunity for growth. He has been applying for jobs since January and has only had a handful of phone interviews, and one in person interview. From Jan-July he was applying for jobs out of state as we wanted to move to a neighboring state. After months of almost daily applications, and only a small handful of phone interviews, we decided to stay in our current city if he could find a better opportunity here. So I think part of the problem was him not being a local candidate.
However, he’s been applying locally for almost four months now (in what I understand to be a very strong job market - SLC, Utah) and has had 3 phone interviews and one in person interview that was very promising, but then they completely ghosted him. He has had his resume re-written twice, once by a professional resume writer and once by my boss’s boss who is a c-level executive and very kindly offered to do this because she loves resumes. So I don’t think his resume is the problem, but even so he’s hardly had any invitations for a phone interview.
Perhaps it’s his interview skills? But the fact that he hardly gets a phone interview is puzzling as well. We both expected him to find something by now given the local economy and job market. He says he applies for jobs just about every day. We’re not sure where to go from here. Career counselor? He’s getting very discouraged. Maybe our expectations aren’t realistic? For what it’s worth he’s applying for marketing specialist up to mid-level management positions.
Edit: thought I should add a little more info about his background. He has a Bachelor’s degree in marketing. He is in his mid-30s and doesn’t have the greatest job longevity prior to his current job. He had a rough few years during the recession and lost a couple of jobs in close succession because the companies folded. So from 2008-2011 he had about 3 different jobs. The longest he worked for a company before his current one was about a year and a half. Could that be part of the problem? No one has ever flagged this as an issue during an interview though, and I would think most employers would see the dates on his resume and assume the recession had something to do with it. All of his jobs have been in marketing/design, so he’s been consistent in that regard.
