I’m currently looking for a bartending/serving position in New York City. I’ve worked in 2 different restaurants both in the niche of seafood. Both are well respected and quite pricey, I would consider one of them where casual and fine dining meet, while the other was definitely in the upper echelon with a higher end clientele. I was a bus boy at the more casual establishment for 1-1/2 years and got promoted to serving, once I showed promise there I was promoted to bartender, and all the while I worked at the higher end restaurant to fill in for servers and bartenders.(I learned the menu on the job and never had any issues). I have a recommendation from both of my former managers and have taken classes on wine etiquette, descriptions, and pairing. I’m looking to move from the boroughs and Long Island to Manhattan. Now I know the restaurant business is very tough in the city but I know I can handle it, I’m good with people and I know my stuff, but I’m only 18 (soon 19) and I’ve been given the impression that high end restaurants won’t take me seriously because of my age. I’m not looking to work at another casual place, I want to up my game and work somewhere respected and revered. What would be my best plan of attack? And should I even waste my time dropping of my resumé to Michelin star restaurants? Will they look at me sideways because I’m younger than the average?
