As a candidate for a job, is it appropriate to ask an employee for a manager's email address?

Hi guys,

So i recently went through 2 phone screens for a job at a popular financial institution. The first was with the recruiter who initially reached out to me via email. The other was with the manager i'll be working under if given the job. There will be an in-person interview and at this point in time, there's about 5 candidates, including me, being considered for the job. So I was thinking of reaching out to the recruiter to ask for the manager's email so I could further sell myself and try to persuade him that I am a better candidate than the rest. Is it appropriate to obtain the manager's contact email in this manner? Also, during the phone screen the manager mentioned that he'll go on a business trip and will be back sometime this week. Should I still contact him or should I wait till I am certain he is back from his trip (that's sometime next week)?
