New company changing “work from abroad” policy. Advice on how to proceed?

I joined a new company two days ago and was led to believe in the hiring stages I would be able to work from a different country while maintaining my position here in Canada and working full time hours.

The Director of the department conducted our 3rd interview from Costa Rica and we chatted in detail about his travels this past year. I expressed this policy is one of the reasons I’m keen to join the company.

I was hired and started this Monday. When I requested to work from a different country, it was passed on to HR who came back saying they would not be able to approve this request as they are rolling out a new policy “in the coming weeks” about this matter.

I’m a bit freaked out as I’ve already bout a one way ticket, made plans to sublet my apartment, etc and I was not given a solid answer, not even given a timeline for when this will be answered. My flight is scheduled to depart on Xmas day and I’m not sure how to proceed.

Has anyone faced anything similar where your company is cracking down on letting employees work from different countries? Any advice would be massively helpful for my jittery nervous. Thank you
