Interviewing for a 12 month contract-to-hire position at a Fortune 100 company (advertised as converting to a role VP role after). What are the chances of it converting after?

I received an interview with a very reputable financial services firm for a 12 month contract to hire position through a staffing firm and was told it would convert to a VP level position after.

Is this something I can ask about in the interview? How do I know they wouldn’t just extend my contract? Or bait-and-switch and offer me the job at an AVP level (which would be a lateral move I don’t really want to take)?
