Did I Screw Up?

I've never dealt with recruiters before but was contacted regarding a job.

First the recruiter contacted me for the wrong province and asked questions that confused me considering my resume was the reason they contacted me (like have I finished high school). I was not told what company they represented or what I'd be doing. After days of back and forth I got the company's name at least and was told I'd operate bend presses, do basic measuring and visual inspection of welds. I am in school for this and want experience so it sounded good. I was told I'd operate that machinery for 3 months after which I could do other things and advancement was possible.

The recruiter couldn't answer my questions about the company and job beyond that description and wanted me to fill out all the employment papers before I could go take a tour of the company.

The tour had me more confused. First the guard wouldn't let me in as I was 10 minutes early. When that got sorted and a guide met me nothing the recruiter told me was mentioned. None of the machinery I expected was in the area he pointed out. I still wasn't told what I'd be doing and was expected to start the next day. At the end I asked what I would be doing since I still had no clue. I was told I'd be driving a truck around the plant as a material handler.

Nothing about driving was mentioned to me at all. I don't even drive a car.

I told the guide what the recruiter had said, that I'd be a machine operator for three months then can do other things. He said it all goes by seniority so I can bid on jobs if they come up but that's it, I'd remain where I'm placed. I was more confused and asked him what kind of jobs the company has. I was told to talk to the union reps about that. They have a list. The guide didn't know the answers to my other questions and there was nobody else I could ask.

Getting out of the plant was as difficult as getting in and I felt very uncomfortable about the whole experience and what I had been told.

I told the recruiter I'm going to have to decline the job offer prior to my scheduled shift. The company wanted something completely different than what I was led to believe and could do, advancement doesn't appear to be doable as I had been led to believe. I couldn't speak with anyone knowledgeable to have questions answered.

The recruiter responded that I would have been moved elsewhere in 2 to 6 weeks and would have been welding eventually (I had specifically told him that I was not interested in manual welding. I applied for the job because it stated I'd be inspecting welds), that I should not have acted abrasively (declining the job) and that the company would not give me another opportunity.

I've never felt so blindsided/uninformed going into a workplace. I have never had to submit paperwork without having an outline of my role. The whole experience was uncomfortable.
