Hi guys ! So I recently started this new job after leaving a previous one that was boring. I only worked there for a month. However, I made a new friend while there and we kept in touch even after I left. We’ve seen each other twice since I left that workplace. I like her, she’s really nice and even vouched for me, serving as a reference from my previous job for another job I didn’t end up taking. We aren’t talking very often so we’re not very close. We texted today and she surprised me by asking me how much I asked to be paid at my new job. Now I know many of you will say that I’m probably overreacting, especially since it’s common in the US to ask people how much they make. But I’m not based in the US and where I am, it’s pretty inappropriate to ask such a question. I haven’t been able to reply since this morning and she probably figured out by now that her question made me uncomfortable. She did ask if it was okay for her to ask me a personal question and I said yes. Though I had a feeling she would ask about my salary expectations, I was taken aback by the the question. I know she’s probably just being curious but still, I feel uneasy about the question. But I also feel conflicted since she did me a favor serving as my reference. How can I subtly answer the question without giving away any amount ? Or should I give a straight answer ? Or should I lie ?
Thanks for your help.
