Male co-worker consistently given better, high profile, important work - UK

He has less experience than I do, less schooling than I do, fewer qualifications than I do. He is younger than me but was born in a little village not far from here so does not have an accent like I do. He is on the same banding as I am and was hired after me, although he did work here a few years ago for a few months.

He is nice enough to me but I can tell from what he says that he believes I'm not as competent as he is. It's subtle but it's there and I generally very much dislike him for it. He contradicts me in front of others or explains details of what I have already said, like I need a translator.

In any case, he was given a highly important, high profile role in our organisation without anyone consulting me. I'm being purposefully vague here but this role is something that I had experience in, and he did not. I protested but was told it had already been done and it was temporary and wouldn't last long.

He's still doing this work and it's been years. He neglects the work that needs to be done in our team for this work and also takes the junior members of our team away from group work to do parts of his role.

Alongside this, he somehow convinced senior management to have him sit on a board that directly controls the work we do. He's not actually in management but he does review all work that comes to our group. I have complained to management that the seat should be a shared seat within our group but I have been ignored and he also spoke to management about my complaint.

He also tries to control how the work is allocated in our group. The group leader is often out and he will tell me that certain work is suited to me, and make it look in correspondence like he is assigning me work.

His work has now been acknowledged by senior management as particularly excellent whilst I have been ignored and passed over for years now by management, even though the internal teams I work with have consistently praised me to my direct management.

I am going to speak to my management about this yet again on Monday. I am planning on telling them I've had enough of this treatment and that I will be looking for other employment unless they (at the very least) make that board seat a shared seat.

I'm not sure this is a wise move so I would like opinions, please. I am also very upset and I believe it may be clouding my judgment.
