So I did something really dumb and basically made everything up in my resume. I'm not kidding, like the entire resume is false minus my education.
I was in the US military for 4 years but got medically discharged (not my fault). Before and after the military, I had several jobs, but they were stupid low-wage, dead-end jobs that I held for a few months or even a year or so, but not much longer than that. I also had long periods, (like 8 months), of unemployment which I'm DEEPLY ashamed of.
I lied primary to cover up the long periods of unemployment and unattractive, low-skill, dead-end jobs. Not only was I deeply ashamed of my past work history, but I also thought that, given my work history, my chances of getting selected for an interview were very low.
In order to change this, I lied and said I was in the military for almost 10 years (I know). I'm currently a student, so I said I left the military a few months before I enrolled in school.
Apparently the company that has just given me an offer is a large investment firm that screens their new hires with a service called HireRight. HireRight has the ability to verify work history. I didn't think this was possible, and from the little research I did before I made up my false resume, I was told that verifying past work history was not possible. I'm assuming the only way HireRight can do this is by accessing IRS tax records.
Can I save myself somehow? I REALLY want to work for this company, it would be a dream come true, but I'm not sure how to "come clean". Is it better than I just reject the offer and reapply some time in the future with my real resume?
