Interviewer asked uncomfortable questions?

Hello, I just had a terrible interview. My interviewer asked me questions that felt rude and personal, but I'm not too sure. They asked me about my degree, which I told them about. That's fine and normal. I went to a UC, which is one of the best research universities in California. It is known to cost a lot, but I basically got close to a free ride due to scholarships and financial aid.

The interviewer started asking me how I managed to afford it, and if I had any loans. It felt inappropriate, but I'm a recent grad, so I'm not sure if that's okay of them to ask me. Are they allowed to ask how I afford college and if I have any loans?
