Our office is pretty small. There are 5 of us and this individual is our most recent hire. He happens to be a smoker and will usually step out once an hour or so to smoke. When he comes back in, the stench of cigarettes trails behind him and the whole office smells like an ashtray for at least 30 minutes. This typically would not bother me, seeing as though I can close my door and be fine, but he also has a tendency to walk into my office to chit-chat immediately after smoking. This leave my workspace smelling horrible.
I have asthma so my lungs are instantly irritated and I try my best not to cough so as to not offend him. I’m not sure how to proceed with this issue. Do I confront him and inform him of the smell? If yes, how do I go about doing this without being offensive? Also, how can I ask him to stop barging in my office to have a conversation; especially after a smoke break? Usually, I’m not very busy and I’ll answer if someone knocks. But before checking to see if I’m working on something, he’ll come in and have a seat and ask a question that spirals into a thirty minute conversation. I’m a bit of an introvert and have always done my best to mind my business and avoid confrontation.
Pls help.
