The letter of recommendation got lost in my email and I never thanked my professor or saw the letter

I have a letter of recommendation from a professor in my school and I never saw when he sent it because it got lost in my email. That was in spring 2021 it’s now fall 2021. Is it too late to thank him and tell him what happened? Would it be unprofessional if I asked him to change the letter for general use in my portfolio or do professors not like having a general letter out there?
