Hi Reddit Universe
Semi long story -- strap in.
About 5 months ago I left my very stressful and mentally draining job of 5 years and made a switch to a smaller company that totally sold me from the outset and it seemed like a fantastic opportunity.
When I was a prospective employee I was sent general info about their insurance plans, and was informed they had a large national provider PPO plan. Upon comparison, this plan appeared nearly identical to my former employer. Imagine my surprise after signing up for their insurance, only to receive insurance cards at home with a totally different insurance providers name on them. Cue cause for concern. I was freaked out, because although I am able to still work full time and have further career ambitions, I do suffer from a chronic illness that involves frequent and often costly medications, one of which is an infusion that essentially keeps me functional ans allows me to have...a life. I have until now, never had an issue getting my meds covered because I more than qualify to be on them.
My rheumatologist submitted all the paperwork and has since been hit with denial after denial for my medication, which I have been on years. I am not being denied for any medical reason, just purely because my insurance plan "doesn't cover speciality drugs", even with a prior authorization. My now current employer denies any knowledge of this (I work directly for the CEO and we don't really have an HR department). I've tried to wait it out, keep submitting and work through with my employer. Simply put, I cannot get my meds through this insurance and that is that.
Slight problem: can't work without meds. My husband however has excellent benefits which we have extensively researched and realized, will cover my meds. It's not cheap to add me on, but it would mean insurance security which is 100% worth it. Like I said, the meds are a non negotiable. But of course in order to get on his before the end of the year, I would need to have a significant change of life event. Quitting my new job would qualify. I am OK with the decision as, among this, there are a few other red flags that have me worried. I can't wait to find another job to start the insurance process, I'm now 2 months behind on my medication and am already suffering from increased pain and decreased function.
So, I essentially understand what I need to do. Here is my question, if I quit this week, does anyone know if I have to wait until my current insurance is expired (sep 1) or can I start that process immediately generally?
I only ask because if I have to wait until end of the month, I might as well tough it out for 2 more weeks and get another paycheck. If I don't have to wait, then I want to get on my husband's ASAP.
Any knowledge or foresight about insurance change after job resignation would be greatly appreciated.
