How to prepare for a manager or a Associate director level jobs….?

I have 21+ years of experience in a specific field in IT. All these days, I have never had a opportunity to become manager as I was chosen for hands-on roles. I am now motivated to become a manager. Also, I see my managers with just over 5 years of experience and way to inexperienced. I wanted to become a manager to know more visibility and high level scope of the enterprise.

I want to know if there are specific list of characteristics which we can prepare for, to become a manager. I would like to know if there are any tip and tricks you guys can share for me to sound like a managerial material.

Also, I would appreciate if you can let me know the trainings available for this kind of stuff.
