I’ve got 15 years of experience between technical fields and warranty claims processing.
A few weeks ago I was tipped off that I’m on the short list for cuts that are coming up soon…. Possibly as early as September. My former boss, who is usually very subtle in his hints, basically said “if you have something else you can take, I suggest taking it”.
Given my business background and technical skills the logical next step in moving up the ladder at my current company is a Product Line Manager position, which I’ve applied for a few weeks ago but doesn’t look like it’s in the cards.
I have another company that I’ve been trying to get into that’s in a similar field. I had applied there several years ago but turned down the offer because it wasn’t a good fit at the time. I applied again recently but did not get the position. Now there’s two positions open, one which is a “foot in the door” lateral/step down move…. Or a management position, which is a jump. I have almost all the qualifications for the management position, except for the “3 years experience Project/Program Management”. I can spin my experience into something that sounds like it, since I’ve essentially been managing a whole department for 5 years (me… I was the whole dept. until they moved me under another dept.)
My dilemma is the fact that I’ve always been told it looks bad to apply for two jobs at the same company at the same time…. and if what my former boss tells me is true then I need something and I need it quick.
Should I shoot for the moon and possibly end up unemployed or should I take the safe bet and be stuck in a position I’d have to work in for at least a year until I can move into a new role.
