Is freelancing full-time possible? If so, how do you make it work?

Hey everyone.

I recently snagged a freelance writing gig with a new client that's a media company. After looking at their rates and crunching some numbers, I realized that I could make this freelance writing gig my main client, but I wanted to reach out here and ask some other freelancers how they make it work.

I have a couple of worries about taking this route. Some of them are:

  • Lack of medical benefits (medical, dental, vision...)
  • Freelance taxes
  • Lack of paid time off? Vacation time?
  • Job security?

But, most of my worries aren't too bad because I plan on getting married to my partner soon which means I'd be able to join their medical benefits. So, that's not a huge worry of mine. My biggest worry is, how do freelancers make sure they're budgeting correctly for vacation time? Emergencies? Medical emergencies? Unforeseen car payments? And things like that?

For those who freelance full-time, how do you make it work?

EDIT: To give an idea, I could possibly be making anywhere from 45k+ to 60k+ a year with this freelance gig depending upon how many assignments I can complete a week.
