Interviewer asks me “what do you think about the starting salary amount for this position?” What do you think is the most appropriate response?

I forget exactly how my interviewer asked that question but it was around those lines. I’m like 99% sure I answered wrong by saying “the amount was about what I expected” when I probably could have said something like “it’s too low.” (Because its only a $5k increase from my current position, is another $5k too much to ask?) But can I even say that? I have my second interview on Friday and I want to be prepared if they ask the question again.
