A couple weeks ago, I accepted a dream job offer with a start date of 7/26. Fully remote, great pay, great benefits, large company with opportunities for promotion, etc. My husband and I are expecting our first child in November, so we are both ecstatic about the opportunity. It's been a rough year for us, and the new job will help us finally have some breathing room.
A little over a week ago, I received the HireRight email requesting my personal info and educational history so they could perform my credit and criminal background check (no employment verification requested, I guess). After a few days of processing, the progress bar was stuck at "your report will be ready in 1 minute" for at least 3 more days. I didn't check it over the weekend. This afternoon (Monday), I get an email from HireRight with my future employer's HR department copied - telling me the company has chosen NOT to offer me employment at this time. My stomach dropped. I don't have a criminal record, my credit is fine, and my start date is in 7 days. Not to mention, I put in my notice with my current employer, and my last day is Friday. This can't be happening.
I immediately logged into the HireRight portal to view the report (for which I had not received notice of completion prior to the email rescinding my offer of employment). Everything on the report checks out, except for one GLARING error. There are three criminal cases, one felony and two misdemeanors, related to financial/fraud crimes for someone the report says has the same full name and DOB as me. In a panic, I emailed my new employer's HR contact to explain what I just saw and asked what they would like me to do. I also contacted HireRight to open a dispute of the criminal history information, and the form said it could take 30 days to complete. The new company's HR contact said to start with the dispute and we could go from there, which is understandable; I wouldn't expect them to just take my word when I say I'm not a felon, I would hope they'd get some sort of verification first.
Next, I called HireRight's customer service number. The rep I talked to transferred me to the dispute department, and the person I talked to indicated they try to work through disputes as quickly as possible, but that it could take several days at least. After I explained that my offer of employment had been rescinded as a result of their error, he updated my dispute to request resolution by this Wednesday. He also provided the "investigator's" email, which turned out to be the general consumer email address for HireRight; apparently, the dispute department supervisors review all emails to that address. I don't know if I believe that.
After ending my call with HireRight, I used Google to see if the court in the county and state associated with these criminal cases had public records online. Sure enough, it does. I searched my full name (which is supposed to be shared with the actual Defendant, according to HireRight) and DOB. Nothing. So, I take out the middle name and search again. Bingo. I pull up the case, and sure enough, it's someone with the same first and last name, but a COMPLETELY different middle name. Like, not even a similar spelling of my middle name, or a missing middle name, etc. - it is entirely, 100% different.
It took me less than five minutes to find this information. Yet, HireRight took a week to incorrectly associate me with someone in a completely different state, with a completely different name and a felony record, and as of right now I have lost my new position as a result. I sent a screenshot to the HireRight dispute email the rep provided and requested that they update my new employer ASAP, but have not received a response yet. Although the HR contacts at my new employer have been understanding, considering the online reviews for HireRight and my own experience in verifying others' employment with them for other companies, I am incredibly nervous that they will either screw up the dispute somehow or otherwise jeopardize my new position. If this isn't ironed out and I lose the new position, I don't think my current (soon to be former) employer will allow me to stay; they are offended that I'm leaving, despite me giving them notice.
