For whatever reason, I notice a lot of executives sit on nonprofit boards. Many of these positions are quite easy to handle but hard to obtain. When they join a good nonprofit board though it undoubtedly makes them look like community leaders and boosts their profile while also giving them the chance to have some fun every now and then (I have several friends that participate in those classic annual golf tournament fundraisers for their nonprofits).
It got me thinking. Regarding current executives or folks who are on track to become a successful executive one day, what else do they do outside their job that others don't but should be? That is, others who are trying to climb that career later. Does anyone know some other examples of norms/expectations for current/future executives, like nonprofit boards, that should be on someone's radar if they have similar career aspirations?
