I got a job with a very large donut chain as a donut maker. The pay is okay, it's not as high as a lot of places nearby (it's about $2 less than other places) but it's money, and I need money to get my GED and start moving on with my life.
My coworkers are very kind, they've helped me a lot and taught me a lot, and have been very considerate (more on this soon). The problem is everything else about this job.
The area I work is constantly about 80 degrees, sometimes it gets to a nice and cool 76 but it's usually somewhere near 80 which wouldn't be a problem if I wasn't working there for eight hours straight.
Which is another problem, we aren't supposed to take breaks. I can usually step away maybe one or two times for like ten minutes and sit down but we don't actually have a time to take a break or to eat. This wouldn't be as big of a problem if it wasn't for the schedule.
I work almost exclusively from 1500 to 2230 and on Fridays/weekends from 1530 or 1600 to 2330 and we almost always get off 15-30 minutes late, usually four days a week though this is becoming five as far as I can tell, which means literally everything I have to do has to be done on my days off. I can't be vacuuming at midnight, there are other people in my house who need rest, I can't do it before work except on weekends as my dad works from home and is on the phone almost the entire day. I can't go to the store after work, it's already closed, for reasons I don't want to go into I usually have to drive about an hour after I come home from work too.
The standing for so long doesn't hurt as much anymore, I still have some blisters on my feet from recently when they did this one free donut for every customer thing (which also helps me realize how stupid some people are for standing 30+ minutes in line for a donut that costs like $2 normally) which had me moving way more than usual. I've hurt my hand working as my job involves turning two wheels tightly to maintain air pressure every 20 minutes or so, for the past few days I've needed to take pain medicine and apply biofreeze to my hand as it gets to the point where it hurts too much to fully close and taking time off to rest it is essentially not going to work as from what I've been told anything other than being in the hospital or a doctor's office will result in being written up, which is even worse considering we serve food and a coworker of mine was sick to the point of vomiting multiple times and was told if he didn't come in he would be written up or potentially fired.
I'm polylingual, however none of the languages I speak to a sort of "conversational" degree are romance languages (specifically I speak English, Russian, Danish and can get around with some German), the problem is most of the people I work with speak Spanish as a first language and very little English. I usually have one of three coworkers translate for me, however if they don't have a shift with me I'm shit out of luck and basically use my own version of sign language which probably looks more like a seizure to the people who love to watch me toss dough like I'm a zoo animal. This means between accents, broken English, muffling because of masks, my tinnitus and ear damage, mistranslations, and the sounds of the machines, being given instructions becomes a fun game of just kind of guess how to do my job or ask again (which usually gives the same or worse results).
The last thing is about the scheduling. We get our schedules last minute (I get my schedule for the week Sunday afternoon meaning planning things in advance is occasionally out the window) and this time I've gotten scheduled for five days in a row. I've worked Friday from 1600 to 2330, Saturday for the same time, today from 0900 to 1300 and I have been "asked" (cough told cough) to work from 1600 to 2230, I work Monday from 1500 to 2230, and Tuesday from 1500 to 2230. This five day stretch on paper will be 44.5 hours, but it's probably going to be closer to 45 or 45.5 and it's not going to mean anything legally as far as I know because it's not a calendar week. I don't even know if that's normal, but when I did the math something about it just upset me, like I do the same thing a full time employee is going to do for less money and no benefits?
Essentially, I hate this job, but I like my coworkers. I've been considering applying for Home Depot as they need someone in lumber and I have been told by many people that I would do well there. The pay is better, from what I've heard the hours are better, and from what I've heard it's more active (which is a plus to me as I want to lose weight and I'm bored out of my mind all day watching donut after donut come off the line), they get actual breaks and lunch breaks.
