Hi All,
I'm at a massive crossroads in my career and I need to decide my action by today to get back to a recruiter. Please provide me with guidance as I'm seriously stuck.
The past 7 years I have been in sales (3 years) and marketing (4 years). I've tended to go back and forth between the two and most recently have been in sales for about a year as a contractor. Previously I was in marketing at a different company.
I recently went on a job hunt for something data related due to an epiphany I had where I realised analytics is my true calling as data has always been my strong suit. My previous employer (where I did marketing) caught wind of this and contacted me to see if I was interested in an insights role. I had hesitations around this as insights wasn't what I was looking into and I didn't much know about the field. However I gave the interview a go and passed the first round, and now I'm having hesitations again since I honestly don't know if I will like insights or not. Salary wise it is slightly below my current sales job and not a concern. The positive is that it's a full-time gig and people know me, so I've already established my credibility in the business from the get go and won't need to go through the pain of being a newcomer. The negative is that the role I've applied to is new and not established, it will be just me and my manager who will be working part-time, and I honestly do not know how much I will learn or if I will like it. I'm not sure if it will even allow me to get on the path towards data.
Now my dilemma gets exacerbated with my current sales job. Albeit a contract position, the positive is that it's is a much larger company and I feel I will have so much more potential to grow. I'm pretty confident that I'd be able to move to a data related role in future if I so choose to, if I can become a full-time employee. The negative is that it's a contract role, and I only have a year or so left. From what I heard there's historically a very, very slim chance of getting a full-time position from a contract role. The reason why I'm thinking of taking the gamble and staying is because someone in my team (that has the same function as me) is guaranteed to leave sometime this year to go back to their home country. Because of COVID this has been delayed for about half a year already. I just don't want to leave now and find out in a month's time that they left. But again, there is very slim chance of becoming full-time. If I don't get it, at least I will be in sales where I'm comfortable and know what to do day-to-day, plus I will have better salary.
I don't take these opportunities for granted and I'm super grateful my previous employer has been so supportive of me. I have been thinking over this for the past weeks ever since my first chat about the insights role. I have asked the recruiter to give me till today to confirm whether I'd like to proceed to the 2nd interview and I just can't solve this myself. I'm extremely confused and if there is anyone out there that can give me some guidance I'd be extremely appreciative. Thanks for hearing me out.
