Advice needed. Boss not acknowledging my time off for brain surgery

I’m going to try to simplify this, but it is a somewhat complicated issue.

My current supervisor has moved up in the company quite quickly and for good reason. He is smart and personable, he understands the needs for our clients, etc. He began as an intern assigned to my office with much of his training being done with me. We formed a friendship and when our team had an opening I encouraged him to apply then advocated for him with upper management. He got the job and he was a great team member until his personal life wouldn’t afford him to work the crazy schedule our team has and he took another job within the agency. We kept in touch and he continued to do intermittent work with our team.

Fast forward a couple years and our team had an opening for the working supervisor position. I encouraged him to apply, wrote a letter of recommendation, etc. He accepted the job and has been in that position for about a year and a half. Unfortunately there have been multiple challenges to the team in that time, we have been short staffed for most of that time, have had many changes in what and how we do things and we have become less cohesive and have a significantly more demanding work load. This is not entirely our supervisor’s fault but he has not been very helpful, supportive or proactive about it. We cover a 6 county area and I have seen him only two times in the past year with my office being on the far west side of our catchment. Each time he stopped at my office, he did not tell my ahead of time that he was coming and he stayed for less than a minute as he was there to drop off/pick something up. He will reach out if there is a problem and I have to call him on the rare occasions that I need his approval for something but aside from that I see him only at our monthly virtual meetings. He often seems out of touch with his team members who aren’t located in the same office as him (he has four staff in the same building that he is at and 7 of us in outlying areas).  He has been controlling about some very minor decisions we have made for ourselves in the past, like who is taking lead on the next assignment, switching shifts with eachother as needed, as well as clinical decisions that we have been hired to make. Additionally, he dominates our (4 hour long!) monthly meetings with trainings that are often not applicable to us or do not take into account the decades of expertise team members are bringing to the table. Importantly, this also leaves no time for ideas, concerns or dilemmas facing the team, our workflow, and basic team building. So I’m struggling to know how to address the following issue…..

After years of suffering with neurological problems and treatment that was no longer working, I recently had to undergo brain surgery.  I am home on a 6 week medical leave that was certified by the neurosurgeon and approved by our HR. My kids are grown and I am rarely sick so I have accumulated 500+ hours of sick leave as well as plenty of vacation time. I mention this because, not knowing me, I think it’s important that you understand that I am a hard worker who goes to work and takes my part in the team seriously. That being the case, I was unhappy about his request that I work 5 12-hour shifts in a row as well as 2 nights of being “on-call” on the week just proceeding my surgery but I understood his wanting to give others a break. Still, it felt punitive. I have been with the agency for 22 years and have never taken more than a two week vacation. I know if I’m not there someone else may have to pick up the slack. I am afraid that my supervisor has done nothing to prepare for my absence and has left my teammates extra short staffed. What is especially troubling is that he has me on the work schedule starting three weeks before I am supposed to be back. He was given the dates by me and HR. He was reminded of the dates a week before I left for surgery. I’m not sure how to address this, or if I should address it. I sure don’t want others planning on me being at work when I am clearly not going to be there.

One last, more personal, note on this….My supervisor did not contact me before my surgery. He did not contact me after either. I have not heard from him at all. His supervisor reached out to me multiple time asking how I was and if I needed anything but nothing from him. The staff located in the same office as me have so supportive and helpful, but not my own supervisor. He did take a vacation the first week I was off so I know he was busy but to say my feelings aren’t hurt would be untrue.

Help me figure out how to best address this. Thank you so much!
