Why are you looking for a new job?

Every time a recruiter or an admin asks, “are you currently employed?” I tell them the truth. But they always get very surprised as to why I would be looking for a new job.

The focus then becomes what would you keep you from leaving us (I have been with my current job for about 2 years now. I never liked it. It was all smoke and mirrors—like 3 employees vs 50+ and growing company I was eluded to. Should have kept my job search going but I didn’t).

Should I lie that I am: 1. Unemployed, 2. Part time to decrease overhead (one of our contractor’s hours were cut from 40-80 hours a week to as needed), 3. Furloughed, 4. Keep telling the truth (though I make it to the final rounds they are super concerned about me looking for better opportunity
