So I've been at this job for about a year, and I'm one of the most tenured people on staff due to high turnover and a pretty negative culture. I don't particularly mind it because I've been remote since day one, but I'm looking to get out in the near future.
At a team meeting last week, the CEO announced that he wanted us all in the DC office by July 5th (to celebrate July 4th). And if we can't make that happen, then we should talk to him and at least have a plan to visit the office during June. Half of the company lives greater than 1,000 miles away, including me, and there was no indication that this would happen.
Can I just say no? I've been promoted twice in the past 6 months, and I'm the only client-facing member of my team who hasn't quit since a very rushed and haphazard reorg 3 months ago. I think it would be a very bad look if I were to leave as well suddenly. The pay is good and I like my clients, but the environment is truly bad (one of the senior people sent a suicide note to the full team a month or so before a reorg where we were all verbally abused by the CEO, who is a nightmare to work with).
I have a lease in my inbox, so this complicates my plans. Though it may be easier to find another job in the city itself. I'm planning to leave before my new lease is up.
Is this a reasonable request on my company's part?
edit: There were also discussions of being remote permanently. This company is just the CEO's vanity project at the end of the day
