Can I get a job with an expired green card (permanent resident)?

Been expired for about 2 years. Once I found out I'll always be a permanent resident, I just got lazy and let it go for this long. Everything is blowing up at my job and I want out. I'm applying for citizenship, but it will take 10-12 months.

Information online isn't really consistent, some websites say I could make due with other documents, some say it will cause a l lot of issues.

Can anybody with experience help?
